Frontier Experience 2
Maryport; Swarthy Hill Milefortlet and view of Solway Firth; Solway Coast Discovery Centre, Silloth.
Of Roman origin (there was a fort and a civilian settlement), modern-day Maryport is the creation of the Senhouse family (also responsible for the Senhouse Roman Museum collection).
The town is walkable from the Museum and there is an Aquarium and Maritime Museum, perfect for the kids. Maryport also has plenty of shops and cafes to keep you busy before you head north up the coast.
Just north of Maryport the excavated turf-and-timber Swarthy Hill Milefortlet was part of the coastal defences, and overlooks Elizabethan saltpans.
Hug the coast heading towards Silloth for remarkable views and the fascinating Solway Coast Discovery Centre.
