Outdoor & Active

All roads lead to Rome – well almost! If you want to Roam where Romans roamed, or prefer the feel of a saddle to sandles, you can easily explore the stunning landscape of the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site on foot, or cycle, or with a little help from your friends.

The Hadrian’s Cycleway runs from Ravenglass, through the heart of Carlisle, and onward to Tynemouth on the North Sea coast. There are numerous shorter circular routes, which offer excellent insights into local history of the debatable border lands around Carlisle.

For those on foot, the Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail winds it way from the Cumbrian Coast at Bowness-on-Solway. If you’d rather appoint your own foot soldiers, an excellent start will be your own personal guided tours. Open Book Guiding Services offer regular tours of Carlisle and Hadrian’s Wall Country, and there are a whole host of operators and transport providers can make you invasion to Carlisle and Hadrian’s Wall Country a whole lot easier than it was in Emperor Hadrian’s day.
