Discover the Roman Frontier
Almost every stone in Carlisle’s Historic Quarter has a story to tell – whether of Border Rievers, Jacobites, Roundheads or Normans. But the fact is that many of these stones were quarried on the order of Emperor Hadrian for his great Wall – and the first records of Carlisle are in its Roman name of Luguvalium.
Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery sits on a Roman site (that can be seen in its garden) and inside the Museum has its own Roman Gallery with regular exhibitions on different aspects of the Empire.
Hadrians Wall started (or finished) in Carlisle but the line of forts follows the Cumbria coast west to Maryport and onto Ravenglass. And heading east the line of the Wall becomes more and more visible with some of the best examples of standing Wall around Birdoswald Roman Fort.
Other great places to visit include Lanercost Priory. There is also plenty more to see eastwards and down the Cumbrian coast of the Roman frontier. Click here for more information.
