Steeped in history, not only is there a direct Roman connection with Carlisle, but there are other Roman sites and easy, do-in-a-day Frontier itineraries to explore within a short distance from anywhere along the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site.
Perched above the Solway Firth in the Cumbrian coastal town of Maryport, the Senhouse Roman Museum offers a fantastic insight into the coastal defences that stretched from what is now the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to Ravenglass. The Maryport Roman Festival runs until September 20th, providing a first hand insight into Roman life.
The Ravenglass Roman Bath House and Hardknott Fort sites are also easily accessible – why not combine this Roman history with the era of steam at the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway.
