Challenge, Charity and Running Events

Running Events along the Hadrian's Wall Path National Trail are NOT encouraged

For very good conservation reasons, running events along the Hadrian's Wall Path National Trail are discouraged - the National Trail is geared up to manage walkers, not runners.  The risk of erosion to the underlying archaeology is much greater with runners than walkers.  Therefore preservation of the grass surface (and any underlying archaeology) is our chief concern and the entire management and maintenance of the Trail/monument is geared up to its use for walking only.

Alternative Routes for large parties who would like to undertake a long distance event

While we don’t encourage challenge events due to the archaeological sensitivity of the ground, we would suggest the following alternatives –

• Hadrian’s Cycleway (NCN Route 72) - Ravenglass to Tynemouth. 170 miles of National Cycle Network stretching the length of Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site in the North of England.

• Lakeside Way in Kielder - The Lakeside Way multi-user path offers visitors to Kielder Water & Forest Park a truly unique experience giving access to the most scenic parts of the lake shore and the opportunity to get up close to some of Kielder’s abundant wildlife. The 26-mile path encircles Kielder Water and is suitable for walkers, cyclists, horse riders, mobility scooters and wheelchair users.

• Hadrian’s Wall – Development of Alternative Routes - We are in the process of developing sustainable routes, which would be better suited for challenge groups, within the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site.  These routes will not follow the Trail but will criss-cross the Wall and provide a quality experience of the World Heritage Site.
