Frontier Experience 8

Steel Rigg; Steel Rigg to Housesteads/Cawfields; Sycamore Gap, Wall and Milecastle; Greenlee Lough; Coesike Turret; Sewingshields Wall; Haydon Bridge.

Between Housesteads and Chesters is glorious scenery set within the Northumberland National Park. The Wall itself is visible without leaving Steel Rigg car park. There are three-mile walks in each direction: Steel Rigg to Housesteads (parking with steep climb, accessible road) is a fantastic, if challenging, walk along the Path with Wall and two milecastles clearly visible; and Steel Rigg to Cawfields (parking) across Winshield Crags (highest point on the Wall above sea level) past continuous Wall. Sycamore Gap (Kevin Costner’s tree, tallest piece of surviving Wall) is accessible by foot from Steel Rigg car park, as is Greenlee Lough Nature Reserve. Coesike Turret, and the Wall and milecastle at Sewingshields, are impressively situated along the Whin Sill; they can be reached by foot from Housesteads. Pull into the riverside town of Haydon Bridge for a bite to eat.
