Frontier Experience 6
Bew Castle; Bewcastle Roman Fort (remains of); Bewcastle Cross; Arthuret Church, Longtown.
Heading north from Brampton, Bew Castle sits within the remains of Bewcastle Roman Fort. Indeed, it was built with the stone from the Fort. The mighty double-rampart Roman earthworks skirt the modern road (parking at St Cuthbert’s Church, access difficult). St Cuthbert’s Church is home to the Bewcastle Cross, acknowledged to be the finest Anglo-Saxon cross in existence. Reputedly the burial place (one of a number) of King Arthur, Arthuret Church in Longtown lies in the heart of Border Reiver country; there is roadside parking and the Church can be clearly seen from the road.
