Frontier Experience 12
Denton Hall Turret and Wall; Benwell Roman Temple and Vallum Crossing; Pons Aelius Fort (remains of); Newcastle Castle; Newcastle; Tynemouth Priory and Castle.
Into Newcastle itself, and it’s amazing to see Roman remains in a modern city. The foundations of Denton Hall Turret and a stretch of broad Wall are visible from the road (no parking). Benwell Fort is long gone but the only Vallum Crossing in existence remains, as does the site of the Temple of Antenociticus (street parking and accessible). Deep under Norman Newcastle Castle’s keep (parking, disabled access by appointment) is the Roman fort built to protect the river crossing (Pons Aelius). Pavement markings give a few clues; all else is buried, as are its secrets. Tynemouth Priory and Castle, monastery-turned-royal-fortress, is accessible from coastal Tynemouth.
