Cycling is a great way to view the spectacular landscapes, enjoy the crisp fresh air and visit numerous attractions (Roman and others) in Hadrian's Wall Country.
There is something for all levels of fitness, ability and willingness. The 174-mile Hadrian's Cycleway goes through the entire World Heritage Site. It is a new cycleway (the final western section was opened in 2007) that combines existing shorter cycle routes, quiet roads and off-road tracks. Clearly signposted, the Cycleway takes cyclists near many major Roman sites, and other attractions are just a short distance from the main route.
The Sea to Sea (C2C) and Reivers cycle routes both run from the Irish Sea to the North Sea. They go into Hadrian's Wall Country and are a great way to get a flavour of northern England. The Pennine Cycleway goes along the backbone of England straight through Haltwhistle, the charming National Byway meanders around Britain, passing through Hexham and the North Tyne valley.
There are also plenty of shorter options already planned out in our four-part series of do-in-a-day cycle rides that cover the whole region. Some are circular, others are linear and all give visitors a completely different perspective on the landscape and its heritage.
