Interest Groups and Action Plans
The establishment of Interest Groups is a key proposal within the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site Management Plan 2008-14 and is seen as an important development in enhancing the effectiveness of the management of the World Heritage Site.
The primary role of the Interest Groups is advisory and is concerned with helping to improve the coordination, planning and monitoring of activities between all those responsible for different aspects of managing the World Heritage Site. The Interest Groups will report periodically to the Management Plan Committee. The work of the Interest Groups will be facilitated and co-ordinated by Hadrian’s Wall Heritage Ltd. HWHL is responsible for co-ordinating delivery of the Management Plan on behalf of the Management Plan Committee. The key task of the Interest Groups is to be responsible for the preparation of annual Action Plans which reflect all partners’ activities relating to particular subject areas. The development of Action Plans will serve to improve shared understanding of current activities, to identify actions required to support and enhance effective management of the Site and to provide better coordination between different activities. The process of developing Action Plans will also provide a means to assess progress made over the previous year and to identify how activities can be made more effective.
The Action Plans are based upon the Policies and Actions contained in Part 6 of the Management Plan 2008 – 14 which can be found on:
http://www.hadrians-wall.org/page.aspx//About-the-World-Heritage-Site/Management-Plan.
There are six Interest Groups which will each produce their own Action Plans. These are:
- Planning and Protection
- Conservation, Farming and Land Management
- Access and Transport
- Visitor Facilities, Presentation and Tourism
- Education and Learning
- Archaeological Research
The subject areas of each of the Groups are broad and wide ranging and each represent an extensive range of interests across the World Heritage Site. In order to reflect this broad range of interests in the work of the Groups and in the development of the Action Plans, participation in these processes is open to anyone who has an interest in any aspect of management of the World Heritage Site. It is important to note that there is some degree of overlap between the contents of the Action Plans and some issues will feature in more than one Action Plan, so you may wish to provide comments on more than one Plan.
While each of the Groups will hold some consultative meetings as part of the process of developing the Action Plans, the easiest way for people to participate in this process is through posting comment and feedback through this website: managementplan@hadrianswallheritage.co.uk. There are likely to be several periods of formal consultation which will be listed on the individual Interest Group pages but comments on the Action Plans are welcomed at any time throughout the preparation of the 2010 Action Plans and thereafter to inform the development future Action Plans.
A seventh Action Plan is being developed for cross-cutting, strategic projects. These will be considered directly by the Management Plan Committee and Hadrian’s Wall Heritage Ltd.
Documentation in relation to the Interest Groups and the Action Plans is currently being prepared and will be posted for consultation on the linked pages above as it becomes available.
